María Luisa Carcedo
Born in Santa Bárbara, San Martín del rey Aurelio, Asturias, in 1953. Graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Oviedo. Diploma in Medicine at Work from the Spanish national school of occupational medicine.
She has worked as a primary care doctor for the health service of the Principality of Asturias, in Sortriondo and at El Natahoyo. health centre in Gijón. Between 1984 and 1991 she had a management role in regional health, first as director of INSALUD's Valle del Nalón heath area, and then as director general of public health in the Principality of Asturias.
She was a member of the regional parliament of the Principality of Asturias and regional minister for the environment and town planning. She acted as spokesperson of the Socialist parliamentary group in the Asturian parliament.
Elected member of the Spanish parliament for Asturias in the 8th, 9th, 10th, 13th and 14th legislatures, and senator appointed by the regional government of Asturias between 2015 and 2018. She was president of the agency for the assessment of public policy and quality of services between 2008 and 2011.
Former high commissioner for the struggle against child poverty. Between 2018 and 2020 she was minister for health, consumer affairs and social welfare. Since April 2023 she has been a permanent member of the Spanish council of state.
