Anton Costas
President of the Economic and Social Council of Spain
Professor of Economic Policy at the University of Barcelona. Essayist. Columnist for the newspapers ElPaÃs, La Vanguardia and El Periódico de Catalunya
His academic interests and research relate to the political economy of policy formation processes and the role of ideas, interests and institutions. His doctoral thesis, supervised by Professors Fabián Estapé and Ernest Lluch, studied Spanish economic thought and liberal economic policy in the 19th century (Apogeo del liberalismo en "La Gloriosa": la reforma económica en el Sexenio liberal 1868-1874, Editorial Siglo XXI Editores, 1988)
His recent books and essays address the causes, consequences and responses to the 2008 crisis, the future of capitalism and the Covid-19 crisis: La crisis de 2008: de la EconomÃa a la PolÃtica y más allá (2010). He has chaired and served on multiple expert committees to advise governments and parliaments on public policy
He was awarded the Grand Cross for Merit for Service to the Economy by the General Council of Economists of Spain in 2019
On the institutional side, he has been president of the Economy Circle (2013-2017) and chairperson of the Economy Circle Foundation (2017-2021)
